Rewiring the Future of Education Through the Power of Sports

By Jeff Golner, President & CEO, STEM Sports®

At STEM Sports®, we believe that the same tenacity and competitive spirit that drive athletes to improve can also ignite a lifelong passion for learning. Our mission is simple yet transformative as we combine STEM academics with the universal language of sports so that K–8 students develop skills they can use in future jobs and for real-life problem-solving. In a world where the next generation must navigate technology, teamwork, and adaptability, we’re creating pathways that bridge the field and the classroom—preparing students not only to play, but to lead.

The inspiration for STEM Sports was born from two distinct yet interconnected realities: the growing need for students to understand how STEM shapes their world, and the opportunity for sports organizations to expand their educational outreach. Founded in 2016, our vision was to show students that STEM is everywhere—inside every pitch, pass, and play.

In the early days, we began generating direct sales, but it didn’t take long for education distributors and resellers to recognize the potential of our approach. We were offering something novel and deeply needed: a hands-on curriculum that uses sports as the framework to teach science, technology, engineering, and math principles. What truly opened doors was the simplicity and accessibility of our model and the physicality it generated for engaged students.

From the outset, we made a promise to educators—our programs would be rigorous yet turnkey and easy to implement. We designed teacher-friendly lesson sequences that require no professional development or prior STEM training, while still maintaining academic integrity and engagement. Teachers are already asked to do so much, yet without all of the essential resources. Every kit comes fully equipped with the necessary sports equipment and science materials, aligning seamlessly with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Common Core State Standards for Math (CCSS), and National Standards for K–12 Physical Education. That alignment ensured our curriculum wasn’t just exciting—it was classroom-ready and standards-based from day one.

Today, STEM Sports curriculum is implemented in classrooms across all 50 states. In most schools, it’s offered as a supplement or elective, allowing students to attend STEM Sports classes five days a week. We’ve taken the essence of sports—strategy, motion, teamwork—and translated it into inquiry-based lessons that promote critical thinking, collaboration, and curiosity.

Our innovation lies not only in the subject matter but also in the methodology. As examples, students learn physics through basketball bounce experiments, geometry through soccer angles, and data analytics through baseball statistics. Every lesson connects STEM to the excitement and relevance of sports, showing students that what they learn in the classroom has direct application in the real world.

The results have been powerful. According to our most recent program assessments, students show a 29% increase in proficiency from pre- to post-program engagement. Teacher feedback is equally strong—93% report satisfaction with our curriculum and kits, while 92% find our “STEM Jobs in Sports” feature effective in helping students see real-world career connections. Another 92% highlight the value of our alignment with 21st-century learning applications, reinforcing that our curriculum doesn’t just teach STEM—it teaches career and technical readiness, which is the purpose behind STEM education.

Our partnerships have amplified that impact. Collaborations with teams from Major League Soccer (MLS), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Football League (NFL) have allowed us to white-label curriculum programs for teams and bring our content to life at arenas and stadiums. These events bridge the gap between education and entertainment, giving students a hands-on look at how data, physics, and engineering shape the sports they love.

We’re proud of the results, but the true success lies in seeing young learners discover themselves through this process—students who once said, “I’m not good at math” are now solving velocity problems through baseball drills and analyzing patterns like data scientists. Numeracy issues become unlocked. When learning feels relevant, engagement skyrockets—and that’s exactly the kind of transformation STEM Sports delivers.

At STEM Sports, I lead with a team-first mindset—one that mirrors the dynamics of any successful sports team. Leadership, to me, isn’t about hierarchy; it’s about empowering others to take ownership, make decisions, and innovate from within. I operate an open-door policy where communication is not just encouraged—it’s expected. We’ve cultivated an environment where every idea, no matter how small, is valued because innovation often starts with the simplest notion.

Our weekly meetings operate on a rolling agenda, giving everyone visibility into ongoing initiatives. We share sales data, celebrate wins, and tackle challenges collaboratively. Transparency breeds trust, and trust accelerates progress. What’s perhaps most distinctive about our culture is I didn’t come from an educational background. My own roots are in sports business and marketing, not the classroom. Yet, that outsider’s perspective has proven to be an advantage. I’m learning about learning every day, and that humility drives our adaptability. And indeed, we did hire and currently employ former educators to power our educational platform forward. This cross-disciplinary approach enables us to continuously evolve. We’re educators, innovators, and entrepreneurs rolled into one—a team united by the belief that education should be as dynamic as the world it prepares students for.

As we look forward, our focus is on digital transformation and global scalability. We’ve recently launched a new digital curriculum and learning management system (LMS) designed to make STEM Sports accessible beyond the physical classroom. These digital modules will allow us to reach students in new geographies, provide customizations for partners, and most importantly deliver data-driven insights to educators; all while not prohibiting the physical input and output necessary from students.

Our global footprint is already expanding. We’ve initiated pilot programs in Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates, testing how our model translates across cultures and educational systems. The early results are promising—proving that the language of sports truly transcends borders. Whether it’s basketball in Lagos or soccer in Dubai, the same sense of curiosity, competition, and collaboration emerges naturally when students connect learning with play.

Beyond international expansion, we’re deepening our relationships with professional sports organizations, while continuing to build bridges between education and industry. We envision a world where every major sports league not only inspires athletes but also cultivates the next engineers, analysts, and innovators who make the game possible.

Ultimately, the goal is larger than growth—it’s legacy. We want to empower a generation that views STEM not as a set of subjects, but as a mindset. A mindset of discovery, resilience, and problem-solving that mirrors the perseverance found on every playing field.

The future of education won’t be built solely on textbooks or technology. It will be built on experiences that engage both the mind and the heart. That’s the field where STEM Sports plays best.
